Canadian music
Friday 4 July 2003
I’ve been reading Have Not Been The Same, a great account of the independent rock scene in Canada from about 1985-95. It’s reminded me that I have some holes to fill in my music collection: the Rheostatics, Jane Siberry, NoMeansNo, and a whole bunch of others.
On the topic of Canadian music, I’m currently huge on a local duo called The Fembots (no, they’re not some sort of gender-bent Kraftwerk - you’re thinking of Ladytron or perhaps Brother Love Canal). Warped and catchy folk-country-rock made with busted-up garage-sale instruments… their latest CD Small Town Murder Scene is wonderful. I want these guys to produce our album!
Also, Jorane. Cello and voice, and occasional guests on percussion and the like - haunting, ethereal, whimsical, gorgeous.
