This week, it’s:
Mushroom soup. Or something
Remember suddenly you promised to make dinner. Scour fridge.
Add 1 cup of water to large stewpot.
Change mind, empty pot and cover bottom with vegetable oil, then put on medium heat.
Dodge violent oil-and-steam splatters.
Swear.
Add 2 cloves pressed garlic.
Dodge violent garlic-and-oil splatters.
Run burned arm under cold water 30 seconds.
Unexpectedly discover 1 medium onion in crisper; chop finely and add to pot.
Add some water. Stir.
Add cubed tofu (frozen, then thawed to give a spongy texture that soaks up flavour), another clove of garlic, and a whole mess of cremini mushrooms, chopped.
Add some more water.
Put in a scoop of whole wheat flour, or two. Stir.
Search cupboards for something interesting to add for flavour.
Pour in most of a bottle of shoyu. Also some more of that red wine that’s been sitting in the fridge and never seems to go away. And some savory. What the hell is the difference between savory and thyme, anyway?
Pour in more water, and the last of the milk before it goes bad.
Add some more water and a couple more scoops of flour. Stir. Swear at lumps.
Make salad in case the above dish is gross.
Find souplike substance surprisingly edible.
Discover from friend that it’s called “Stroganoff”.
Quiet week. Saturday’s gig went smashingly. J’s family came out to see us, and his dad yelled “You da man!” after “I’m Invincible”, which seems to be our new crowd-pleaser. Woo!
